How To Use the Preterite and Imperfect Tenses of Ser

Spanish has at least two common ways of translating simple phrases such as it was using a form of the verb ser — era and fue — but it isnt always easy to know which one to use. Uses for the Two Past Tenses of Ser  Overlap The two forms represent different past tenses, era for the imperfect and fue for the preterite. Corresponding forms also exist for subjects other than it — you could say either eramos and fuimos for we were, for example. Conceptually, the differences between the two past tenses are fairly easy to grasp: the imperfect tense generally refers to actions that occurred numerous times and/or didnt have a definite end, while the preterite typically refers to actions that took place or at least ended at a definite time. However, for the English speaker, applying those concepts to the past tenses of ser can be problematic, partly because it seems in practice that native speakers commonly use the imperfect for states of being that had a definite end, while an application of the rule above might suggest use of the preterite. Similarly, it would seem logical to say, for example, era mi hija for she was my daughter, because presumably once a daughter always a daughter, but in fact fue mi hija also is heard. Similarly, it isnt hard to come up with sentences structured and translated similarly where one of the verb forms is preferred over the other. Here are two such pairs:  ¿Cà ³mo fue tu clase? (How was your class? The preterite tense is preferred here.) ¿Cà ³mo era tu juventud? (How was your childhood? The imperfect tense is preferred.) ¿Cà ³mo fue el partido? (How was the game? Preterite.) ¿Cà ³mo era la ciudad antes? (How was the city before? Imperfect.) Which Tense of Ser Is Preferred? It is difficult to formulate an exact rule for which tense of ser is preferred. But it may be helpful to think of the imperfect (such as era and eran) being used primarily when talking about inherent characteristics and to think of the preterite (such as fue and fueron) to refer to events in the broadest sense of the word. You can see this distinction in this recent list of top Web search results for era:  ¿Einstein era malo en matemà ¡ticas? (Was Einstein bad in mathematics?)Si ayer era malo ... (If yesterday was bad ...) ¿Quien dijo que la marihuana era malo? (Who said marijuana was bad?)No sabà a que yo era capaz. (I didnt know I was capable.) ¿Era malo Hitler en realidad? (Was Hitler actually bad?) In all these sentences, it might be said that era is used to refer to the basic nature of persons or things, even if they had a definite end. Note the differences from the following: El semestre pasado fue malo. (The past semester was bad.)Tu amor fue malo. (Your love was bad.)El paisaje de amenazas digitales fue malo durante el aà ±o pasado. (The cyberthreat scene was bad during the past year.)Esos negocios fueron malos  para Grecia. (Those businesses were bad for Greece.)Al final Chiquidrà ¡cula no fue malo para Panamà ¡. (In the end Chiquidrà ¡cula wasnt bad for Panama.) These sentences also refer to the nature of of things, but the things can all be thought of as a type of event. The love of the second sentence and the businesses in the fourth were  decidedly temporary, for example, and the other sentence subjects can be thought of events in a more traditional sense. The use of the preterite also is more common when it is followed by a past participle: El concierto fue pospuesto. Ultimately, as you learn Spanish and hear it used by native speakers, youll get a clearer idea of which verb form sounds more natural.

The Common Occurrences Of Comorbidity Between The Disorder

As mentioned previously, there is an overlap between the personality clusters. The most significant comorbidity occurrences with ASPD include paranoid personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (Out of the Fog, 2015) See figure 4 (Appendix C). Furthermore, additional studies are suggesting that 67% of those diagnosed (DSM-IV) with a personality disorder also met the criteria for at least one other mental disorder. Antisocial personality disorder has often been found to coexist with anxiety disorders (52.4%), mood disorders (24.1%), impulse control disorders (23.2%), and substance abuse disorders (22.6%) (Out of the Fog, 2015). The common occurrences of comorbidity between the†¦show more content†¦With so many similar antisocial traits making up both diagnoses of CD and ASPD as well as having similar risk factors predisposing the progression to each disorder, it seems relevant to assume there is some connection to the disorders. Literature Review Lee N. Robbins, PhD., was among the first to publish a large scale research study on adults who as children, showed deviant behavior. Her findings revealed that the majority of adults with antisocial behavior also displayed symptoms relating to conduct disorder as children. Additionally, she concluded that about one third of those with conduct disorder will be diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder as adults (Kjelsberg, 2006). Numerous other studies since Robins have been done to show a correlation and a progression between CD and ASPD. Research published in 2005 found similar associations as Robins did in 1966. Lahey et al., found the progression from childhood CD to ASPD to be 37% (n=177; male) â€Å"greater at each higher number of childhood CD symptoms† which advocates that behaviors associated with CD significantly predict the future diagnosis of ASPD with the DSM-III-R. Additionally, when taking socioeconomic status (SES) into consideration, 65% of the male children who met the criteria for CD also came from lower SES families. See figure 5 and 6. (Appendix D) (Lahey, Loeber, Burke, Applegate, 2005).

United States Bill of Rights and American Sporting Tradition Free Essays

Gun Control Gun control would not help crime or murder rates because instead it disarms the law abiding citizens, therefore putting them at a disadvantage in defending there selves against criminals. The second amendment states that citizens have the right to bear arms. Guns have also been an American sporting tradition for years, and have saved many lives from rapist, murders and innocent civilians from the hands of criminals. We will write a custom essay sample on United States Bill of Rights and American Sporting Tradition or any similar topic only for you Order Now The second amendment is part of the constitution and is something that should never be taken away, and can’t be taken away. The amendment says that â€Å"A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. † The first 10 amendments to our Constitution protect our most basic rights from being stripped away by an overly zealous government, including rights that all Americans hold dear. The United States Bill of Rights plays a central role in American law and government, and remains a fundamental symbol of the freedoms and culture of the nation. One of the original fourteen copies of the U. S. Bill of Rights is on public display at the National Archives in Washington, D. C. This amendment and right give us the citizens a chance to defend ourselves from danger from not only criminals but also a foreign attack. A shooting sport is a competitive sport involving tests of proficiency (accuracy and speed) using various types of guns such as firearms and air guns. Hunting is also a shooting sport, and indeed shooting live pigeons was an Olympic event only once, in 1900. The shooting sports are categorized by the type of firearm, target and distances at which targets are shot at. Shooting sports have been a part of the Games since Baron Pierre de Coubertin brought us the first modern Olympiad in 1896. It was one of the first nine events held at the first Olympic Games along with track and field, Cycling, Fencing, Gymnastics, Swimming, Tennis, Weightlifting, and Wrestling. Guns have been a huge part of American history since the Olympics started in 1896. Guns have been used for many years not only to defend our country but also defend ourselves in the event of being attacked by a criminal. If the availability of guns is the major reason for the murder of people, why isn’t it that when the rate of gun sales go up the murder rate doesn’t go up as well? The answer is simple guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Imagine if the 10,000+ victims had guns of their own. That statistic could have shockingly stayed the same, just with different victims: the criminals. Americans tend to believe that guns are easily obtained, when in reality federals laws already passed make it impossible for criminals to legally obtain a weapon. Gun sales have gone through the roof since president Obama took office yet in terms of violent crime, the United States is safer today than it was 20 years ago. Violent crimes will continue to exist with or without stricter gun control. Guns will always be obtained by criminals if they want to get their hands on one, and making stricter gun control laws will only make civilians defenseless against these criminals. Taking the right to bear arms away will not save lives it will only cause more violence and since criminals don’t follow the laws in the first place more laws would only hinder law abiding people not the criminals; they will still get any type of gun they want because the all mighty dollar is king. Even if we outlawed all guns criminals would still have them smuggled into the country just like drugs. The only thing that would accomplish would be law abiding people would be defenseless and the criminals would rule. How to cite United States Bill of Rights and American Sporting Tradition, Papers

Indian Genocide Essay Example For Students

Indian Genocide Essay Indian Genocide Essay The United States government used military force to follow a policy of genocide toward the Native Americans. Politically, the policies of removal, concentration, and assimilation caused the death of thousands of Native Americans. Economically, the United States government used military force whenever any valuable resource was discovered on Indian Land. Socially, the near extermination of the Buffalo caused starvation and death among the tribes. The evidence clearly indicates that the United States government used military force and economic pressures to conduct a policy of genocide towards the Native Americans. For decades, the United States practiced policies of removal to gain valuable land for itself. The policies of removal, assimilation, and concentration caused the deaths of thousands of Natives. The song Indian Reservation by Paul Revere and the Midnight Raiders is a reminder of the Trail of Tears, which killed a of the Indians that marched. The government removed the Indians from Georgia to benefit the plantation owners in the south, at the expense of the Native people in the area. Even the Supreme Court of the United States agreed that removal of the Indians from that land would be illegal, but President Jackson went ahead and did it anyways. The Indians marched over a thousand miles until they were west of the Mississippi River. It also gives a general overview of how the whites put the Indians on reservations and tried to assimilate them. The beads we made by hand are nowadays made in Japan, shows how the whites took over the Indians culture and commercialized it. Another situation in which the government practiced assimilation and concentration was with Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce. Josephs tribes were cooperative and sold their land to the whites as long as they got to live in their valley, but eventually the whites wanted all their land. The Indians fled and tried to make it to Canada, but 30 miles from the border they were caught and rounded up. They were sent to live on reservations, and most died of white diseases or starvation. By the year 1890, all Indians were on reservations. The Blackhawk war, which happened over land disputes in Wisconsin and Illinois, also led to the death and relocation of numerous Indians. This disrespect towards the Indians was typical of the time period. The US used its military superiority to benefit itself economically in regard to the Indian situation. The Sioux war was fought over gold that the U.S. government found in the mountains occupied by the Sioux Indians, and it ended with the Indians being forced to live on reservations. In 1861, settlers wanted land that Indians occupied, so that led them to move them to the Sand Creek reservation. The local whites in the area ended up massacring 400 Indians that were under protective custody. Apparently even the Indians that were supposed to be protected by treaties were not safe from the wrath of the U.S. government. The Song One Tin Soldier by Coven describes the discovery of gold in the Black Hills and shows just how far the United States would go to gain wealth at the expense of the Indians. The Natives wanted to live in peace, but the whites wanted the treasure that was buried there. Now the valley cried in anger, mount your horses, draw your sword. And they killed the mountain people, so they won their just reward. This describes the situation that was faced when the whites found a valuable resource on Indian territory. The whites usually bought out the Indians and when they couldnt they killed them and got what they wanted. .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283 , .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283 .postImageUrl , .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283 , .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283:hover , .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283:visited , .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283:active { border:0!important; } .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283:active , .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283 .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u7a5f5f007958553ba25b54dce3804283:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Thatcher and Blair Essay Among the most famous of the men who massacred Indians for the benefit of the whites was General Custer. He had no problem with massacring women and children to help the government gain money. However, the whites were not always successful in pushing the Indians around. Maslow Hierarchy Theory Of Motivation - Free Sample

Question: Describe about the Maslow Hierarchy Theory of Motivation. Answer: Preface Maslow hierarchy theory of motivation is the research thought of Abraham Harold Maslow. He was an American psychologist and his all research work stressed to focus on positive qualities of people and not on the negatives. Maslow always questioned himself to understand human nature and know what the driving forces that motivates the people most in their lives. Abraham Maslow being an expert in the subject matter of psychology paid close attention to the human behavior in different situations and on various parameters when needs few or all gets fulfilled or remain narrowed away. Positive outcomes and thoughts were always successful in creating healthy environment and motivates people to bring best of them. (Keith, 1973) Maslow always have positive belief that people always have ability to achieve their desired goals. He did not denied that situations in ones life are always powerful to shift focus from good to bad and vice-versa. Maslow theory of motivation helped in understanding human behavior and reactions and thus, action plans were easy to take care of their desires. (Andrew, 1991) Maslow Hierarchy Theory of Motivation Maslow hierarchy theory of motivation is about five needs of human. This theory believes that a need that is not satisfied dominates the behavior of an individual. Maslow Need Hierarchy Theory have five important needs that are structured in the level of their importance. 1-Physiological needs. 2-Security/Safety needs 3-Social needs 4- Self-Esteem needs 5-Self-Actualization needs Physiological needs- These needs are basic and their fulfillment provides satisfaction and leads to continuity of life. Such basic needs are desire to have food when hungry, drink water when thirsty or sleep when tired .So these needs can also be called as priority needs. Such need are must to be fulfilled in order of the survival of the human race. (Joshi, 2011) Security needs- Once physiological needs are met, next in queue are safety or security needs. The need to make future secure, need of the family, health, property form the security needs. Job security is on important as it brings monetary benefits for the present and also for future such as provident funds, pension, and gratuity and so on. (Keith, 1973) Social needs- The need of belongings is one of the greatest needs of the human beings. We live in social environment and acceptance by social group or individuals is desired .Human beings strives for stronger relations such as friendship, family when they become socially stable. (Andrew, 1991) Esteem needs- It is more important for human that others should realize his worth. The need of confidence, achievement, and respect of others are self-esteem needs. It is also the need for status and power. Self-Actualization needs- As per Maslow what a man can be should be. A self-actualized person have confidence to trust his instincts and is unmindful of the physical surroundings. Such needs brings best in the people. Maslow hierarchy theory of motivation is detailed concept and need well illustrated examples are required to understand the theory. We will take each of the motivational needs one at a time. It is crucially important to understand the pyramid of hierarchy and know on what basis Abraham Maslow defined the needs and did the grading of the motivational needs. The basic genre is that need which motivates the most stands at the higher rank in Maslow theory but again basic needs holds importance as it is the need of survival. (Griffin) Maslow theory of motivation is applied with assumptions such as human character is positive and goodness or frustration existence is natural phenomenon. Maslow theory believed that human brains are pretty complex and there runs parallel processes at a time and therefore there are chances of being motivated by various levels of motivation as defined in Maslows theory of motivation. Maslow stated that a certain need "dominates" the human organism .Thus Maslow acknowledged the likelihood that the different levels of motivation could occur at any time in the human mind, but he focused on identifying the basic types of motivation and the order in which they should be met. (Joshi, 2011) Physiological needs: Maslow theory stated that physiological needs are actually dimensions of money motives. Human beings are motivated to earn more and more to take care of their hunger, sleep, thirst and these needs get multiplied when a person moves from living alone to being a family man. We can understand it well that money is the best source to fulfill some of physiological needs. When such needs does not get fulfilled, it is not possible for human system to operate and it may fail. Here failure is the end of the human phase. For example, even if all physiological needs of human are getting fulfilled except food/diet, the lack of discontented need will overshadow the other needs and survival will be in danger. In a nutshell, lower needs take priority until met and also a need fulfilled no longer motivates. (Andrew, 1991) Safety needs: As per Maslow, safety or security needs functions mainly on the psychological level of human beings. Life always does not co-operate to fulfill human needs and there are repercussions for the same. Now security needs doesnt always count for being physically safe and secure but there can be financial safety, well-being of oneself and family or personal safety against the acts of accidents and so on. Social needs: Maslow theory of motivation states that social needs come into picture after physiological needs and security needs are fulfilled. It is the need of love and belongingness. Maslow did not deny from a fact and opened it as-when a need is fulfilled for a longer time, it tends to practically become vague. There could also be situations where the social need of motivation crisscross their self-esteem. In such situations, human being expect to be respected first and then loved. (Keith, 1973) Esteem needs: When the point of discussion is esteem needs, Maslow theory of motivation have defined it in a very technically and emotionally pattern. Esteem need is the combination of self-esteem and self-respect. Its meaning in a nutshell is to be accepted by others and also valued. By valued, it means people to understand your worth. (Griffin) Self-Actualization needs- It seems to be ultimate goal of achievement. Self-actualization refers to believing in oneself and making efforts with all your potential to become what one can be. There can be anything a person can be dedicated to such as efforts to be a good father, desire to be renowned artist or singer or athlete. Criticism of Maslow theory of motivation-Researchers have supported the concepts of the theory but not the order of the need presented in the theory. It was also said that though Maslow observed and highlighted the human needs but did not provided concrete guidance on how should managers take care of employee needs and cater them as per bandwidth of the organization. There could be ups and downs in order the needs get fulfilled and a harsh fact cannot be denied that all needs cannot be fulfilled always. Argument Essay Sample Grade - How to Get it Right

Argument Essay Sample Grade - How to Get it RightAn argument essay can be tricky, but with the aid of an argument essay sample grade I will show you how to get it right. After doing the research I was able to come up with my own answer to this question that no one seems to have a good guide to. Here is the answer. As a student I never really got the concept of writing an argument essay. My main problem was that my essays were not getting good grades. A teacher actually asked mewhat would happen if I wrote an essay based on a history lesson?I could have had several different options to select from, and I really wanted to write something unique. I decided to use audio and written text to come up with my argument. After doing all of the research I chose the following essay topic. The problem that I faced was that the professor wasn't giving any credit for this essay. There was no one who was really judging my work. He told me that the professor didn't think my essay was very good, but I w anted to write something unique and it worked. So I decided to do some research on how to write an argument essay.I came across a middle school student who used this strategy. So I knew that I wasn't the only one who struggled with this topic. I also figured that it was the same for me, I wanted to write something unique. With the help of technology and all of the other resources that's digital age offers, the answer was right in front of me. I just needed to go online and find the strategy. The best resource that I found was an essay grading company. They are an organization that will grade your assignment for you and turn them into an A, B, C, D, F, or G grade. Most middle schools have them. They also have an option called the Originality and Creativity guideline that will tell you what a grade should be.The reason that they are able to grade essays so well is because they are trying to show that all essays are written differently. Jobs management style has turned around the company from a loss making company in the 1990s to a world leading electronic company. A letter to Apple management and employees written by Steve Jobs on January 17, 2011, explained that the manager was under medical leave of absence; in his speech the same day, he explained that he wanted to focus on his h ealth, thus he wanted to be relived official duties (Apple Inc, 2010). How will the company adjust to changes expected to happen in the company? How much will be the manager cost (the salary that was given to Steve was only $1) The problems must be addressed as soon as possible since a delay in operation in the fast changing computer world may mean that the company will lag behind its competitors. After its registration, it started making single board monitor and keyboard-free personal computer, which were valued at $580. The response of the new product was massive that the company had to reinvent the same product and came up with a mouse, keyboard, and coloured monitor computer that were named as Apple 2. In 1984, the company invented Macintosh model; they were silicon technology computers targeting learners and business customers. Since then, the company has been successful in the electronic industry (Apple Inc, 2010). Steve Jobs Born in February 24 1955; Steve Jobs with Steve Wozniak, Mike Markkula and other co-founded Apple Inc in 1970 however, power struggles in the company forced him out of the company management in 1984, he later formed a company called NEXT , which specialised with software’s. He was married on March 1991 to Laurene Powell; they have three children. The aggressive manager was diagnosed with cancerous tumour in his pancreas in mid-2004. He made it clear to his juniors about his health problems; since then the manager has been fighting with the disease however in late 2010, the manager health problems accelerated that he is contemplating leaving his duties in the company. April 2009, Job underwent a liver transplant which greatly affected his efficiency and decisiveness was greatly affected (Apple Inc, 2010). Past performance of Apple company without Steve Jobs After the departure of Steve from the company, a door of problems opened; they faced lacklustre of problems between 1989 and 1997, where demand of its products reduced drastically. The main cause of the poor performance was poor strategic decisions made by the company’s then management. The management decisions were not effective enough to remain competitive in the fast changing computer world; specifically, the company was facing competition from Intel and IBM whose technology was advanced; it could make cheap computers. The company had no visionary strategy whereas other companies in the same industry were aggressively positioning themselves. It was operating so badly that three chief execute officers were not able to turn it around. In 1993, John Sculley, the then C.E.O. made alliances with IBM, Intel, and Novel; however the decision resulted to a further reduction of the company’s profit by a further 16%.Advertising We will write a custom term paper sample on Apple Inc. Company specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Since the company’s incorporation to 1990’s, the company had embarked on strategic alli ances. This had left the company worse off in many alliances until the decision was challenged by the comeback of Steve Jobs (DE WIT and MEYER, 2010). Return of Steve Jobs in Apple Inc After recording negative profits, the board of management decided to look for a C.E.O to change turn around things. It was clear that there was a deficit in proper leadership. Steve Job was seen as the manager to be called on board to change the company’s deteriorating state. After the manager return, Apple was compelled to acquire NeXT Software Company, which provided the company with software compatible with Window 95, named Copland. The move to have Steve on board again is seen as the start-point of the company’s comeback. Steve Job became the company’s acting C.E.O. in 1997; and full C.E.O. in 2000; he is credited to have used his knowledge, experience and creativity to turn the company’s performance around. He took the company when its share price was as low as $3.30, and had a net loss of $580million. Jobs management strategy made the company came out strong and more focused to customers needs. Other than embarking on internal processes improvement, Steve Jobs looked into all stakeholders; he asked for a salary of $1 Peelen, E., 2006). Steve journey at Apples Inc After the 1996 come back of Steve, the first decision that he challenged was previous alliances; he termed the alliance termed as an international growth and cost cutting strategy, with little focus on internal expansion and business growth. The immediate challenge that faced his management was the invention of Window 95, which Apple PCs could not handle; this made the company’s profits to deepen further by 3% (Wheelen and Hunger, 1998). Steve after the depression in profits embarked on active research and developments to ensure that he will have a successful business outcome in the future (Sadler, 2003). Apple has been able to develop and maintain strong brand identity; a portio n of electronic market has developed confidence and loyalty to the brand. In 2008, the company made a profit of $1.61 Billion, which was beyond the budgeted returns for the year.Advertising Looking for term paper on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! In 2006 to 2008 consequently, it was voted as the most innovative company; it also doubled as the most admired company in the United States of America. The recent past good performance of the company can be attributed to the good leadership of Steve Jobs. He is seen as the architect of the company who is able to combine available human and physical resources for the benefit of the company. Internationally, the company has been respected for its innovativeness and its name in the world domain has increased; in 2008, the company was voted the 24th most favoured company; this was an improvement from 33rd position as reported in 2007. I the success of a company has a direct connection with the decisions that management make; the philosophy applies to Apple where the management are given credit of its success. Many are the times t hat companies have collapsed because of bad leadership; leadership spans far from the person involved to include other parties like how he manages his teams and delegates power. Steve is seen to have mastered the game plan at apple and thus there is need to have a manager who can meet his standards (Peelen, 2006). The way forward The company has lost reliable charismatic leaders who have seen the company through thick and thin; his health has definitely affected the performance of the company, there is need to have another manager who can fit or surpass the performance of the Steve Job. Other than following the normal recruitment process, there are some vital characters that the company should be interested in the new manager; they include: Innovationists The computer world is undergoing an increased innovation with new products being introduced in the market. Apple Inc is well known of its innovativeness; for three consecutive years, 2006-2008, Fortune 500 has voted the company a s the world’s most innovative company. Computers, Software, consumer electronics like I-pod and I-phones, MP3 player, and mobile phone, which are the company’s products are being produced by other international bodies and thus for the company’s products to stand out in the market, then innovativeness should be adopted. The new manager should aim at deriving the company to new heights through his innovations and inventions. A past record of successful innovations in previous company should be looked into. As it is the company’s culture, the new manager should adopt a customer-based approach so that the company products can satisfy the needs of customers and remain competitive. Other than focusing on the products to sell, the manager should have a strong drive for good marketing and advertising strategies. Apple Inc does not rely on one market base; it keeps developing other markets through its changing products. Strategist Every company requires strategi es to face its competitions, Jobs success made timely strategies and effective strategies to focus the company. In modern computer world, strategic alliance may not be avoided, however before the company settles for an alliance, the company to venture with should be well vetted. Although a manager does not have to make all decisions in the company, but the role that the new manager should play is to ensure that the employees are given an enabling environment to give their idea on what they think can be undertaken in the company for its success (Fred, 2008). The manager to be taken on boards has an international mind and development strategy; the electronic industry is on an international level where the manager should understand factors affecting other nations in regards to the industry. This is in marketing, advertising and pricing strategies. Should appreciate role played by research and development teams Information technology changing fast: Apple needs to undertake massive res earch and developments of its products. The success of the company can be attributed to research and development programs. Electronic industry is change-oriented; thus the new CE.O. Should offer support to the department. When Steve came back to Apple, he took his time to understand the trend of the industry so as he could make strategic decisions. Research and development department advises a company on products and process changes. It ensures the company understands the society and external environment so as it can make timely and relevant decision. Hardware’s’ are composed of high tech software that makes them unique and has increase the utility customers derive from them. In 2005, the research and development department played a major role in strategically placing the company to enjoy from change in business trend of IBM. IBM, which was a leader in computer hardware production, sold its PC Company to a Chinese company called Lenovo; the company aimed at concentrati ng on software and operating system. After the decision was made, Apple was faced with the challenge of devising ways to position itself in the market with specialisation. With the change of line of business by IBM, the company PC competition was on high competition where specialisation took centre stage. Some companies like Lenovo concentrated on hard wares while IBM and Microsoft concentrated on software, to over come this, Apple embarked on massive investments in research and development that has seen it to current situation. It is with the same spirit that the company have embarked on I-pods and I-phones production (Oster, 1994). To get the new manager, the company should follow the following steps: Recruitment process The company should advertise the post in international and national labour markets; this will offer the company a chance to get applicants with difference experiences. It may do this individually or contract a reputable recruiting company to undertake the exercise . In the advert, there should be a full analysis of what it is expected of the new manager in terms of education, work experience and the performance in the company. Employing a person with a proven record of accomplishment is crucial for the organisation as they will have a rather guarantee that he can perform as expected. It may become important to have some of the employees who were working with Steve Jobs to take up the role left; as much as this is an option, it should be undertaken with a great deal of caution to have a fully qualified person undertake the tasks (Haberbeg and Rieple, 2001) Orientation and introduction to organisational culture In case the person so recruited is not an employee of the company, the company has the role of orienting the C.E.O. in the company. This stage is important since in case delayed and take a long time, and then the company may be left dragging behind in the changing computer technology world. Apple has a strong organisational culture which is seen in the way it has innovated different products; the manager must be introduced to the policies and mechanisms that have been put I place to ensure that the manager appreciates the organisational culture and probably make it better (Oster, 1994). It is difficult for a manager to venture into business that had a well performing manager and start to increase the profits and operations, he needs to take his time and know the teams, which were previously part of the large success, so as he can put his strategies right. Therefore, the company should give an allowance of sometime to adjust for the manager. Future remedy processes Apple seems to be at a dead rock since the role played by Steve Jobs seems to be un-interchangeable; an approach that the company should aim at changing. As much as the company has a strong knowledge management policy, there are deficits in delegations and managers preparations. In the teams working with Steve, there lacks a person who have been mentored and prepared to take leadership in case of an in-eventuality. This approach is not health for an international company; it should be changed. Preparing of managers to take future leadership positions is a policy of human resources and deliberate measure by those people in power and the lead people. In the world, there are in eventualities that people have little control over thus a company with a bright future should incorporate such cases in their plans. Conclusion Apple is an international electronic company with a strong brand name in national and international arena. The problem currently facing the company is looking for a chief executive officer who meets and probably surpasses the standards set by former C.E.O., Steve Jobs. Steve is suffering from cancerous tumour in his pancreas; he has resigned from day-to-day operations in the company. Apple Inc being an international company requires a manager who can come-up with strategies to become and remain competitive in the fast ch anging technology world. A manager of such a class can be recruited after appropriate vetting of his/her past performances and putting on mechanisms to facilitate recognition of his potential. Other than considering academic qualification, the company should be concerned on personality traits of the manager. References Apple Inc. (2010). Apple Computers Inc. Definition and Examples of Diglossia (Sociolinguistics)

Definition and Examples of Diglossia (Sociolinguistics) In sociolinguistics, diglossia is  a situation in which two distinct varieties of a language are spoken within the same speech community. Bilingual diglossia is a type of diglossia in which one language variety  is used for writing and another for speech. When people are bidialectal, they can use two dialects of the same language, based on their surroundings or different contexts where they use one or the other language variety.  The term  diglossia  (from the Greek for  speaking two languages) was first used in English by linguist Charles Ferguson in 1959. Diction Versus Diglossia Diglossia is more involved than just switching between levels of diction in the same language, such as going from slang or texting shortcuts to writing up a formal paper for a class or report for a business. Its more than being able to use a languages  vernacular. Diglossia, in a strict definition, is distinct in that the high version of a language isnt used for ordinary conversation and has no native speakers. Examples include the differences between standard and Egyptian Arabic; Greek; and Haitian Creole.   In the classic diglossic situation, two varieties of a language, such as standard French and Haitian  creole  French, exist alongside each other in a single society, explains author Robert Lane Greene. Each variety has its own fixed functions- one a high, prestigious variety, and one a low, or  colloquial, one. Using the wrong variety in the wrong situation would be socially inappropriate, almost on the level of delivering the BBCs nightly news in broad  Scots. He continues the explanation: Children learn the low variety as a native language; in diglossic cultures, it is the language of home, the family, the streets and marketplaces, friendship, and solidarity. By contrast, the high variety is spoken by few or none as a first language. It must be taught in school. The high variety is used for public speaking, formal lectures  and  higher education, television broadcasts, sermons, liturgies, and writing. (Often the low variety has no written form.) (You Are What You Speak. Delacorte, 2011) Author Ralph W. Fasold takes this last aspect a bit further, explaining that people are taught the high (H) level in school, studying its grammar and rules of usage, which they then apply to the low (L) level as well when speaking. However, he notes, In many diglossic communities, if speakers are asked, they will tell you L has no grammar, and that L speech is the result of the failure to follow the rules of H grammar (Introduction to Sociolinguistics: The Sociolinguistics of Society, Basil Blackwell, 1984). The high language also has more intense grammar- more inflections, tenses, and/or forms than the low version.   Neither is diglossia always as benign as a community that just  happens  to have two languages, one for law and one for chatting personally. Autor Ronald Wardhaugh, in An Introduction to Sociolinguistics, notes, It is used to assert  social  position and to keep people in their place, particularly those at the lower end of the social hierarchy (2006). Different Definition of Diglossia   Other definitions of diglossia dont require the social aspect to be present and just concentrate on the plurality, the different languages for different contexts. For example, Catalan (Barcelona) and Castillian (Spain as a whole) Spanish, dont have a social hierarchy to their usage but are regional. The versions of Spanish have enough overlap that they can be understood by speakers of each but are different languages. The same applies to  Swiss German and standard German; they are regional. In a bit wider definition of diglossia, it can also include  social dialects, even if the languages are not  completely separate, distinct languages. In the United States,  speakers of dialects such as Ebonics (African American Vernacular English, AAVE),  Chicano English  (ChE), and Vietnamese English (VE) also function in a diglossic environment. Some people argue that Ebonics has its own grammar and appears related in lineage to Creole languages spoken by enslaved people of the Deep South (African languages melding with English), but others disagree, saying that its not a separate language but just a dialect.   In this wider definition of diglossia,  the two languages can also borrow words from each other.

Perspectives Paper Research Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Perspectives - Research Paper Example It might be of some interest to note that that not only ‘behavior’ but also ‘learning’ was not given much importance by early day psychologists. Possibly they concluded that ‘behavior’ was something that could neither be quantified nor categorized and thus did not merit any special investigation. However, at the beginning of 20th century some psychologists felt that ‘behavior’ indeed identifies a man and makes him stand out in his interactions with fellow humans and therefore can very well be considered as an outward manifestation of an individual’s psychological constitution. Though, they did agree that it cannot quantified and thus cannot be measured or compared in absolute terms. Thus, a small band of psychologists took it upon themselves to study ‘behavior’ in intricate detail while the majority continued to stick to the earlier stance of not giving ‘behavior’ that much importance. In this paper the perspectives of Watson, Skinner and Tolman are compared and contrasted and an attempt has been made to relate their perspectives to modern day approach to psychology as a separate discipline. John B. Watson Watson is widely believed to be the father of the term ‘behaviorism’ and is credited with the introduction, or should we say, infiltration of this term in mainstream psychology. Watson also took a distinctly adamant stand in the age old nature versus nurture debate in that he believed that nurture, which is, how a person is brought up and his experiences since childhood, plays a distinct role in shaping his approach and attitude and nature has very little role to play in such formation. As a proof of his contention, he conducted the famous experiment of white rat and how fear got instilled in the psyche of Little Albert when a loud frightening sound accompanied every time the rat was shown to the child. As a further proof of his contention, in a slightly changed scenario, he showed the white rat to the child who was struck with a steel bar a little while after he observed the white rat. Thus fear acquired two connotations to Albert, one is the sight of the white rat and the other was the sound of his crying as he was struck by a steel bar. By this combined exposure to conditioned stimulus of the white rat and unconditioned stimulus of getting struck by a steel bar Albert was conditioned to be perpetually afraid of white rat. Watson reasoned that fears that are conditioned remain with a person and modify his behavior for the rest of his life (Leary, 2004). By the end of the first decade of 20th century Watson published his classical treatise Psychology as the Behaviorist Views It where he made a tersely woven logical case for behavior to be considered as an integral part of psychological analysis. He started his argument with the assumption that was never doubted or challenged by any scholar that psychology is a scientific discipline on its own merit. As psychology is a separate science it needs to be based on empirical data that could be independently verified through experiments. Facts that are observed during experiments are by definition observable and could be codified. The only publicly observable aspect of psychology is behavior and not consciousness that can neither be observed nor codified. Therefore, the most popular method at that time of studying consciousness, that is, introspection cannot be termed as a scientific

Contribution of Management of Information Systems to Information Essay

Contribution of Management of Information Systems to Information Systems - Essay Example The paper tells that businesses are more prone than any other body to rely upon the use of information systems to conduct their daily operations and for communication within the organization. Information systems hold data regarding the business operations, employees, sales statistics, stock, and the most popular products. The software has also advanced to the level where it is easier for information systems to compare statistics and data and help management in forming critical decisions regarding business operations. It is also easier to transmit this data from one manager to the other and provide different managers with their required data easily. Not only do information systems show information, they are now able to analyze information and help managers in making decisions regarding the company. However, computers and information systems do not have a brain of their own and the decision of which software to use and which information system would be best fitted to the requirements o f the company, lies in the hands of the management of the company itself. Information systems are a critical and important aspect of businesses and other organizations now. The mismanagement of an information system can lead to the incorrect transmission of information, which can prove highly consequential for a company. Moreover, if the information system was chosen is not adequate for the task it is to perform; this may lead to inadequate results and an improper analysis. Hence, it is highly important for information systems to be managed correctly and the correct software is used with frequent updates to allow for information systems to be as beneficial as they should be for a company.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Online Business Information Technology Essay

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Online Business Information Technology Essay Several decades ago nobody could have imagined that development of technologies would lead to radical changes in business management. Moreover, we did not even suppose that a usual process of buying and selling which was implemented through real communication between buyer and trader would become so convenient and accessible. Till some particular moment communication was the only way of holding negotiations we got accustomed to, which now is being gradually replaced by this new possibility to do business by using the Internet technologies. From year to year online business method that was intended only for privileged is becoming more and more demanded and available for everyone in the cyberspace. Electronic business has a significant impact on company performance and new ways of growth and improvement are opened for its subsequent prosperity. This improvement is achieved by changing the concept of operations and establishing closer relationship with customers. The economic basis of e lectronic business is radically expanding the audience, increasing marketing effectiveness, accelerating the process of buying and selling of all kinds of goods and services (Shelly Vermaat, 2009, p.737). We used to refer the phrase electronic shop (Shelly Vermaat, 2009, p.738) to a specialized website where web visitor is able to purchase any goods directly online and acquaints preliminarily with their descriptions. Customers process of buying in an electronic shop differs from the traditional form of purchasing items in usual shops. This trend of modern trade continues to grow and this is the reason why most companies are now actively converting conventional business models and are focused on multi-marketing strategy. Today, investment in electronic business is a priority for many of them. However, its solution is necessary for clear understanding of the key factors which determine the success. Although electronic business definitely has valuable advantages over other types of business, it has disadvantages which should not be overlooked. It cannot be denied that the main benefits of online business are its low start up cost and fast development in comparison with the common one. There is no need in renting a physical space as the cyberspace is infinite area to some extent and the seller can suggest a wide range of products. Therefore the clients have more extensive choice. The more things the customer has to choose the more satisfied he/she is. For the generation of online shops it does not require a lot of efforts and time to set it up. At the beginning of the business a websites developer should register the project and promote it through various advertising companies. All these costs do not require a lot of money expenditures while in conventional business it does. Thus, any business process, in which you can use the electronic interaction between people, has the potential for reducing expenditures, which, in turn, entails lower prices for customers (Fields, 2007). Another important advantage of online business is its capability to attract not only local customers but also a worldwide audience with minimal effort. Of course, it is possible to reach international public through other forms of advertising like traditional ones: television, radio and print media. But all together they are not as effective in reaching potential clients around the world as electronic marketing is. Basically, any product or service that is registered on the World Wide Web has a limitless market that transcends age, culture, geography and time zone (Campbell, 2007). No matter of wherever and whenever the clients are, it is not a problem now to get the things they want within the shortest period. At the same time, it unites people of all ages, races and occupations into one whole community of online buyers in some meaning. Having a discussion with each other on the forums, the clients from different countries exchange their knowledge about some kind of products and get both useful information and also an international experience of communication. Online business gives traders a possibility to earn money even if they sleep as their shops work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The important feature of the Internet is that it has automatic operating mode of websites and therefore the probability of missing clients is minimized in this situation because they can purchase goods at any time they want and what is of high importance is that sellers save a lot of their time. Thousands of people can surf website simultaneously without making a crowd while it is rarely happens in offline business. In addition, traders can spend enough time doing the things they like and working at the time they prefer. It is very convenient for them to manage daytime in this way as they can put the work aside whenever they like and get some rest or vice versa (Smith, 2005). A very strong side of starting online business is the fact that in the situation of business failure the businessperson does not lose his/her life savings. Usually the activity of electronic business has to be stopped because of the deficiency of profit and thereby the businessperson has to end his/her activity. The only thing the owner can lose is his/her money that were spent for the development and promotion of business. The risk of such failure can be much bigger if business was granted franchise. It means that all the efforts the seller put into activation of business, the list of his/her patrons and customers in common, a respectful position in the business sector, communication with persons of consequence, all these life benefits disappear in a moment. Electronic business has transformed its customer service into the convenient and effective one. Auspicious conditions were created for maintenance of confidential relationships between clients and traders. The customer can contact a commercial agent in an interactive mode to get more information about the product or service. Furthermore, the clients can read recommendations and reviews of different people within website who already have opinions about items that they want to buy or already purchased and used them. If some product the customer wants to buy is not available for the current time then it is possible to send a request to inform him/her about its appearance via e-mail. What is more convenient is that payments can be implemented online and the items can be delivered to the customers without their participation (Iyer, n.d.). Remember the situation in the shop when people have to go through different departments to find the items they need. It takes a lot of time and power and as a consequence the amenities of shopping disappear. Fortunately, online shops have a very smart option the possibility to search products in catalogues just by entering the keywords into search form. After several seconds the integrated search engine would find all the possible offers of goods. It is a very attractive option for people who do not like to waste a lot of time on selecting the products (Shelly Vermaat, 2009, p.745). The last advantage I want to pay attention is a lack of necessity in hiring personnel like software engineer to run online business. The basic thing to activate online store is to create and upload it to the Internet. Even if hire a professional programmer, it would be a kind of a temporary work which does not require permanent control. One way around this is to outsource as many of your business functions as possible (Kaarakainen, 2010). If later the shop owner could fulfill such things like monitoring of the website, observation of clients requests and some other stuff by himself/herself then there is no need in outsourcing anymore, maybe except the situations like technical problems when it is almost impossible to hold down a job without specialists help. Having considered the main benefits of online business it is important to pay attention to the drawbacks as they put obstacles in the way of taking the leading position of online business running. A use of electronic communications is becoming one of the key conditions for the survival of companies in a huge competitive environment however competition is also one of the most alarming problems. Because competition comes in all forms and shapes, your sales pitch would have to be truly attention-calling (Campbell, 2007). One of the necessities in the competitive activity is occasional price reduction when only the most stable business could survive. The customers often become victims of a warm work of competitive organizations and sometimes can find it difficult to make the right decision in choosing the right goods for themselves. So the only possible constructive tool in clients attraction could be the proper marketing strategy in the cruel wars of the business rivals. As online shops became accessible for all the visitors so the tendency of copying ideas which were put there is of high possibility. People tend to do these things following the main motivation of gaining as much profit as possible. In view of the fact that if ones online business is not officially registered as the trade mark then stealing the project of website construction is not taken as a copyright offence. So that means that everyone who would take the same concept of already existing website could live with no worry. It is a very grievous aspect of open business activity when all your marketing strategies are visible and clear (Kaarakainen, 2010). Another disadvantage that also should be observed is a security threat of supposed electronic transaction which customer usually accomplishes during the purchase. People are still worrying about security of electronic commerce in spite of the wide spread of modern software that helps to protect their personal information. Through the growing number of fraudulent schemes people in most cases are afraid of giving details of their account until they are sure about the reliability of the payment system. And such behavior is fully justified as no one would like to lose his/her money (Campbell, 2007). As all the talks of customer and trader are implemented via the Internet it is really hard to build a good and trusting relationships (Burton, 2008) between them because of their isolation from each other. Most of people find it almost impossible to negotiate in this way as they do not have any idea of who they are contacting with. Therefore, the seller should endeavor a lot to satisfy all the needs of the clients and try to keep positive and friendly relationships in order to attract as many new customers as possible for the further possible collaboration. In conclusion I would like to stress that all the mentioned advantages of online business are very strong and have conclusive proofs that maintaining business with the help of modern high technologies is optimized as much as possible and continues to develop day after day. For those who have never tried it, electronic business could be perceived as not serious occupation but this system really works. Just look at the real examples of such successful online companies like Amazon or eBay as they are the parts of the list of online giants with overwhelming profit made since their creation. Unfortunately, we should admit the fact that deficiencies hamper subsequent progress of online business techniques and traders have to cope with them. In the near future it seems to be the full dominance of high technologies in the commerce sector and its improvements would be interpreted as a fertile soil for the effectiveness of peoples saving time (Shelly Vermaat, 2009, p.751).
